YEREVAN. – During its Cabinet meeting on Thursday, the Government of Armenia will approve a decision on regulating the import of white sugar (purified sugar) into the country, 168 Zham daily reported.
“This [decision] is about banning purified sugar imports. This specifies that white sugar imports from third countries are permitted on the condition of paying the 10-percent import customs duty for [importing] a capacity not exceeding 4,000 tons over the course of one year.
“It seems this provision is [made] especially for [ruling party MP and business tycoon] Samvel Aleksanyan because the company belonging to Samvel Aleksanyan imports raw sugar, and not purified sugar; that is, Aleksanyan will continue to import raw sugar without [paying] customs duty. And the other businessmen [, on the other hand,] will definitely not import sugar anymore because, first, a maximum limit of 4,000 tons is in force. Second, [because] they need to pay customs duty,” 168 Zham wrote.
