YEREVAN. – According to the Armenian National Statistical Service official data, the banana prices in the Republic of Armenia (RA) have risen more than 10 percent, as compared to December 2014, Haykakan Zhamanak daily reported.

“This is noteworthy in the sense that Armenia is a member in the [Russia-led] Eurasian Economic Union [EEU] as of January 2 of this year, and the banana is one of those rare goods the EEU customs duty imposed upon which is lower—5 per cent—than the customs duty—of 10 percent—the RA had specified until then.

“In the meantime, according to official statistics, the banana [price] has risen more than 10 percent in our [i.e. Armenia’s] stores.

“This, in turn, means that, owing to its monopolistic position, the profits of the Catherine Group company, which carries out monopolized banana imports [into Armenia], have increased by at least 15 percent,” Haykakan Zhamanak wrote.
