YEREVAN. – Zhamanak daily has learned that President of the Constitutional Court (CC), Gagik Harutyunyan, has the biggest ambitions to become the next President of the Republic of Armenia (RA), reported the daily

“On March 23, 2018, Harutyunyan will turn 70, and he is not opposed to continuing to preside—after a 15-day short rest—, but not in the office of the CC, rather the RA President. This is possible if the working Constitution is replaced by the new [draft] Constitution, and the [RA] President is elected by 262 people [i.e. electors], and not by a popular vote.

“Harutyunyan realizes that he will not get even 262 votes in case of a popular vote,” wrote Zhamanak.

Chapters 1 through 7 of the new draft Constitution of Armenia were made public on July 15. Accordingly, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
