YEREVAN. – The companies and businesses in Armenia that prepare fish products are faced with major problems these days, reported Zhamanak daily.

“Russia, where our [fish] products are primarily exported to, either prohibits the import of the product at the border, or destroys the product at the very border without valid reasons.

“[But] spokesperson of the State Inspectorate [i.e. Service] for Food Safety [of Armenia], Nvard Arakelyan said they are not familiar with other cases apart from the destruction of 200kg of sturgeon, and they have petitioned to the Russian side to get an explanation for this case, but they still have not received an explanation.

“Director of the Russian Institute of Strategic Development, Andranik Nikoghosyan[, who also exports fish products from Armenia to Russia], told us that according to his information, tons of products were not destroyed, but there were some obstacles, which is worrisome regardless of the quantity destroyed. And the obstacles are primarily due to our businesses’ ignorance of the law of the [other] EEU [i.e. the Eurasian Economic Union] member countries [i.e. Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and most recently, Kyrgyzstan],” wrote Zhamanak.
