YEREVAN. – A total of 39,246 first-graders attended school in the new academic year in the Republic of Armenia, reported Haykakan Zhamanak daily.

“This data was given to our correspondent yesterday [i.e. Wednesday] from the RA Ministry of Education and Science. This [number] is around two thousand more than it was in the previous year.

“This increase, however, is only partially comforting because the number of first-graders enrolled in schools [in Armenia] is less than expected in both years.

“In 2009, for example, according to official data, 44,413 children born in Armenia, and who should have attended school this year. But, as we noted, even less than 40 thousand [of them] went to Grade 1 [this year]. In 2008, [a total of] 41,238 children were born [in the country], whereas around 37,500 [of them] went to school [in Armenia] six years later,” wrote Haykakan Zhamanak.
