YEREVAN. – Alireza Kameli, Managing Director of National Iranian Gas Exports Company (NIGEC), announced that an agreement was reached with Armenia with respect to tripling the amount of Iranian natural gas exports to the Caucasus, according to Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper.

“The announcement by the Iranian side is very interesting, and it is likely that it is a part of a far-reaching regional program.

“The Armenian authorities need to seek new sources of energy.

‘“The 5th energy unit of Hrazdan [Thermal Power Plant of Armenia] has the potential to become a part of the Armenia-Iran ‘gas for electricity’ deal,’ said [economist] Artak Manukyan.

“In Manukyan’s words, this may bring also some competitive displays of the gas prices in the electrical energy market [of Armenia], and a reduction in [electricity] prices [in the country] is also possible,” wrote Haykakan Zhamanak.
