YEREVAN. – Following the recent tragic incident in Armenia’s Goris city, Governor Suren Khachatryan of Syunik Region handed in his resignation and, subsequently, Deputy Governor Ara Dolunts was appointed Acting Governor, Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun (CI) daily recalls.

“He [i.e., Dolunts] is Acting Governor, and this fact has caused a variety of rumors. Incidentally, there is a group among the ruling circles [of Armenia] that works against the appointment of Dolunts [as governor].

According to CI’s information, Colonel Melikset Poghosyan’s (Melo) candidacy as future governor is circulated, too. He is a fellow countryman of [President] Serzh Sargsyan. Melo [just like Sargsyan] was born in Tegh village of Goris region.

Melo took part in the Artsakh [i.e., Nagorno-Karabakh] movement. He commanded a volunteer [military] unit in the years of the [Karabakh] war. Afterward, he was a brigade commander for a long time, and he is Goris Military Commissar since 2007. He was awarded the Order of the First Degree Military Cross,” Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun writes.
