YEREVAN. – Some non-pro-government Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) MPs question the statement by Štefan Füle, European Union Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, that it is no longer possible to sign anything in Vilnius, Iravunk daily reports.

“We asked PAP NA [i.e., National Assembly] Faction Secretary Naira Zohrabyan as to the reason behind such view by the PAP representatives.

‘“My position is that the discourse with European Union should not be suspended, so as to complete the most serious bilateral reforms.

‘As for the Vilnius statement, I would say, yes, it is impossible to sign what was negotiated; this is quite understandable because a very deep document on political association and economic integration [with the EU] was negotiated, which is incompatible with the Customs Union,’” Iravunk quotes.

To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union.
