YEREVAN. – Some invisible processes are occurring in Armenia’s domestic politics, 168 Zham daily reports.

“All these processes are based on the expectation that the decision [of Armenia] to join the Customs Union must also have domestic political implications; first and foremost, in the form of abrupt changes in power. After September, however, no significant change has occurred in Armenia.

“In the meantime, all the political forces and the poles of power that ‘blessed’ September 3 expect [official] Moscow to recompense for their devotion and, by way of bringing them to power, punish the incumbent authorities that played games with Europe. [But] the latter [i.e., the incumbent authorities] are well aware of this peril, and [therefore] it is not unintentional that they ask to speed up the process of Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union.

“The political battle in Armenia is waged on the key issue as to whether the authorities or the opposition is more loyal to the ‘Russian line,’” 168 Zham writes.

To note, following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union. And in response to this development, the European Union had stated that the signing of the Armenia-EU Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area agreement is now doubtful.
