YEREVAN. – The 25th anniversary of the devastating Spitak earthquake in Armenia will be commemorated on Saturday, Hayots Ashkharh daily reports.

“In this connection the daily spoke with director Hrachya Petrosyan of the Armenian National Seismic Protection Service.

“Specifically, he informed that two seismic bases are closer to [capital city] Yerevan.

‘“One is the Parakar base, the other is the Garni [base]. Fortunately, the Parakar base is a weak seismic potential. [But] the same cannot be said about the Garni seismic base.

“Garni is a more dangerous zone for us [in Yerevan]. If a magnitude 8-9 earthquake occurs in Garni, there would be a serious aftermath in Yerevan,’” Hayots Ashkharh quotes Petrosyan as saying.
