YEREVAN. – As is well known, on January 29, a family which is Azerbaijani citizens sought political asylum from Armenia on the Armenian-Georgian border, Zhamanak daily reports.

“[But] Armenian State Migration Agency Head Gagik Yeganyan told Zhamanak that this is not the first time; there were cases of seeking political asylum in Armenia from Azerbaijan during the past years, too.

“He noted that 320 people—whose 290, Syrians—applied for political asylum in Armenia in the previous year.

“To our question as to why they specifically apply to Armenia for political asylum, Yeganyan responded: ‘First and foremost, they apply in order to be protected from political persecution; they are persecuted in their country.’

“We also asked especially from which countries they primarily apply for being granted political asylum in Armenia

‘“Last year, from Syria, Iran, Turkey, [and] several African countries,’” Zhamanak writes.
