YEREVAN. – On May 29, in Kazakhstan’s capital city Astana, the leaders of the founding countries of the Eurasian Union and the Armenian President had agreed that they will come to an agreement on several matters in the coming month, and, as a result, Armenia may sign, by no later than July 1, the agreement on joining the Eurasian Union, Aravot daily reported.

“It was clear already in Astana that Armenia will sign the agreement by July 1, if it agreed to the condition put forward by Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev [that a customs checkpoint should be set up between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (NK)].

“In the official website of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, however, the Decision No. 71 is already issued, according to which the Council sets the outlined term of no later than July 1 for Armenia’s joining the Eurasian Union treaty.

“And the interesting thing is that there is no reference in this decision either to NK, or that the provisions of the agreement on the Eurasian Economic Union will function under this or that condition.

“[But] it is hard to say whether the Armenian authorities have already managed to come to some agreement with the Eurasian trio [Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan], or the trio will continue to be consistent in processing the Azerbaijani president’s letter,” Aravot wrote.

The treaty on the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) was signed, in the Kazakh capital city Astana on May 29, by the leaders of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. In addition, Armenia President Serzh Sargsyan participated in the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and offered to sign a treaty on Armenia’s Union accession by no later than June 15. In response, Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev spoke about the letter by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev calling to accept Armenia into the Eurasian Union only within the limits of the country’s internationally recognized borders, and not including Nagorno-Karabakh. But Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, stressed the need to sign a respective document with Armenia in the shortest period of time.
