YEREVAN. – Patriotic music was playing on Friday at Liberty Square in capital city Yerevan at virtually the same time when President Serzh Sargsyan signed, in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk, Armenia’s Eurasian Economic Union accession treaty, 168 Zham daily reported.

“It seemed that the music could not have had anything to do with the document signed in Minsk, but the [opposition] rally, which started shortly thereafter, showed that Liberty Square was basically celebrating Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union.

“First, almost all speakers at the rally considered it their duty to note that they are not taking any steps directed against Russia. And the foremost was the statement by Armenia’s Founding President, ANCP [i.e., the opposition Armenian National Congress Party] leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan that the Eurasian Union accession is irrevocable. Moreover, he was eager to again denigrate those who are against this accession,” 168 Zham wrote.
