YEREVAN. – Armenia, represented by opera tenor Liparit Avetisyan, for the first time participated in the Muslim Magomayev international competition for young singers, which was held recently in Moscow, and under the sponsorship by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Aravot daily reported.

“Speaking to Aravot, Liparit Avetisyan said that in the previous two contests, the winners were determined as a result of two days [of performances]. [And] as a result of the two-day performances [in this year’s contest], he garnered 302 points, which assumed the first prize.

“But seeing that an Armenian singer is in first place, the panel of judges changed the rule on the spot, taking as basis the points garnered solely on the second day [of the competition].

“As a result, the first prize was awarded to the representative of Mongolia, the second to Armenia, [and] the third to Azerbaijan; this is the case when the competition organizing committee had petitioned to the Ministry of Culture of Armenia for the first time, with a request to send a contestant from Armenia.

“Incidentally the second-place award ‘was worth’ USD 15,000,” Aravot wrote.
