French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the European Political Community Summit, called for strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy and reducing dependence on external partners in key sectors.

According to him, this concerns not only security and defense, but a broader range of areas, including energy, food security, space, and semiconductor production.

Macron emphasized that excessive dependence on other countries in strategically important industries renders Europe vulnerable. He recalled that such risks had already materialized during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine, which exposed Europe's dependence on Russian gas.

The French President also touched on the topic of the so-called American "security umbrella," noting that this issue remains sensitive for European countries. He stressed that despite the allied relationship with the United States, Europe must strengthen its own independence, taking into account its dependence on China as well.

According to Macron, the key task today is to develop a comprehensive risk-reduction strategy that will require closer coordination, investment and solidarity among European states. He pointed to the need to localize part of production within Europe, diversify partnerships, and strengthen supply chains as protection against geopolitical threats.

Macron separately highlighted the risks posed by growing global confrontation, particularly between the US and China, which could further expose existing dependencies.

He also stated that Europe holds significant advantages — including its commitment to democratic values, international law, open trade, and climate action — making it a more predictable and reliable partner for countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

A prominent place in his address was given to the situation around the Strait of Hormuz. Macron said that Europe can play a constructive role in ensuring stability and freedom of trade in the region through diplomatic and economic tools, adding that work in this direction is already underway in coordination with international partners.

In conclusion, Macron emphasized that despite the wide range of challenges, including the situation in Ukraine, European countries must act together to achieve strategic autonomy and strengthen their role on the world stage.
