Iranian news agency Fars, citing local sources, reports that two missiles struck a US Navy ship near Jask Island after the vessel ignored warnings from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps demanding that it stop.
Reports of the attack emerged after President Trump announced that on Monday the United States would begin Operation Project Freedom, aimed at escorting ships blocked in the Strait of Hormuz.
US Central Command said it would support the operation with 15,000 troops, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, as well as warships and drones.
