US President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he expects to hear from Iran “tonight” with a proposal to halt military actions in the region, The New York Post reports.

“Presumably, I’ll get a letter tonight. We’ll see what comes of it,” Trump said as he prepared to leave the White House for dinner at his golf course in Northern Virginia.

When asked whether he thinks Iran is dragging out the process, the US president replied: “I don’t know. We’ll find out soon.”

As The New York Post notes, the one-page memorandum of understanding that Trump expects to receive in response is expected to serve as the basis for a broader agreement, with negotiations to be held later.

The United States has offered Iran sanctions relief in exchange for ending uranium enrichment and resuming commercial sea routes through the Strait of Hormuz, sources familiar with the negotiations told the publication.

“We need to learn something today,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters at the US Embassy in Rome. “I mean, we’re expecting a response from them. Let’s see what they say. There’s hope that this could move us toward a serious negotiating process.”

Rubio noted that the Iranian government is “still deeply divided and somewhat incapacitated,” which “could be an obstacle.” He also warned that Tehran’s efforts to control shipping in the Strait of Hormuz would be “unacceptable.”
