US stock indexes ended Friday higher. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes reached new all-time highs on upbeat tech stocks and employment data.
For the full week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%, the S&P 500 rose 2.3%, and the Nasdaq gained 4.5%.
The US Labor Department reported that the economy added 115,000 jobs in April. Analysts surveyed by Trading Economics, however, had expected a much more modest gain of 62,000.
March's job growth was revised up to 185,000 from the previously reported 178,000.
The unemployment rate was unchanged in April and, as expected, was 4.3%.
Shares of semiconductor manufacturers also recorded significant growth: Qualcomm Inc. shares rose by 8.2%, Advanced Micro Devices by 11.4%, Intel Corp. by 14%, Applied Materials by 6%, and Micron Technology Inc. by 15.5%. Dell Technologies shares rose by 13.1%, Sandisk Corp. by 16.6%, and Nvidia Corp. by 1.8%.
According to the forecast of analysts surveyed by LSEG IBES, the profit of companies included in the calculation of the S&P 500 increased by almost 29% in the first quarter. Moreover, the main part of this growth was provided by companies related to artificial intelligence.
In the case of 83% of the 440 companies that published reports, the profits exceeded experts' expectations. This is significantly higher than the historical average of about 67%.
On Friday, shares of Cisco Systems Inc. rose 4.8%, Tesla rose 4%, UnitedHealth Group rose 2.8%, Boeing Co. rose 2.7%, Apple Inc. rose 2.1%, Alphabet Inc. rose 0.7%, and Amazon.com Inc. rose 0.6%.
Meanwhile, CoreWeave shares fell 11.4%. The cloud infrastructure solutions company reported better-than-expected first-quarter earnings, but projections for the current period disappointed investors. The company also announced an increase in capital expenditures in 2026.
Cloudflare shares fell 23.6%. This happened after the IT company announced its intention to reduce staff by about 20%.
Expedia Group shares fell 9%. The online travel holding warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East will negatively affect travel demand.
Microsoft Corp. shares fell 1.3%, McDonald's Corp. - 2.8%, Salesforce Inc. - 2.4%, and Home Depot Inc. - 1.4%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 12.19 points, or 0.02%, to 49,609.16 points.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 61.82 points, or 0.84 percent, to 7,398.93 points after trading.
And the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 440.88 points, or 1.71 percent, and the trading session ended at 26247.08 points.
