According to Armenia’s legislation, Yerevan is obligated to turn itself towards the European Union (EU), said Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
“You know that this [i.e. the intention to integrate into the EU] is happening in Armenia. A corresponding law has been adopted in Armenia, which, in fact, already legally obliges Armenia’s government and all bodies of state authorities to turn towards European integration. Of course, this will undoubtedly become a topic of discussion,” the Kremlin spokesperson told reporters.
But EU membership is not at all a question of “near future” for the candidates, and Europe has been “showing such a carrot” to Turkey for many years, Peskov noted, commenting on Armenia's intention to join the EU.
"Therefore, EU membership for many states is becoming a kind of unfulfilled dream, although one should always ask the question: And is that a dream?" the Kremlin spokesperson added.
