The issue of relations between Armenia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), in the context of the country’s rapprochement with the European Union (EU), will be discussed at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting, which will be held Friday in Astana, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Secretary General Sergey Lebedev said.

“In general, as far as I know, a discussion is underway. Of course, they touch upon the topic of the EAEU, the EU there, but this will already become known after the results of the narrow session,” Lebedev told Vesti newscast, expressing the opinion that this matter “will be discussed in a friendly atmosphere.”

But he noted that this a matter of principle.

“In principle, the question [to Armenia] is posed like this: do you choose the EAEU or the EU? The EU is a very long story. Many countries want to enter the EU, the process of joining the EU has been dragging on for years, whereas the EAEU is a reality from which it is now impossible to turn backs. As Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and many other figures have already stated, currently no one is going to sever ties with the EAEU. Therefore, cooperation will continue. And as for the EU, we will see," the CIS Secretary General added.
