The issue of Armenia’s membership in the European Union (EU) is still rather theoretical, and the country’s EU membership seems unlikely before 2030. This opinion was expressed by Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Fernand Kartheiser (Luxembourg) in an interview with Izvestia newspaper of Russia.

According to Kartheiser, the EU treats Armenia with sympathy, and relations between Yerevan and the EU are gradually deepening. However, as the MEP noted, the issue of Armenia’s EU membership is still largely at the hypothetical level.

Given Armenia’s geographical location and complex relations with at least one of its neighbors, such a candidacy raises many questions. Although EU-Armenia relations have steadily improved in recent years, Armenia’s EU membership is unlikely before 2030, Kartheiser said.

He stressed that despite the positive dynamics of EU-Armenia cooperation, the real prerequisites for Armenia’s quick accession to the European Union are still insufficient.
