The main point of our election program is the construction of a railway to Iran, which shall pass from Gagarin via Syunik—via Meghri and Agarak. The Armenian National Congress (ANC) party’s prime ministerial candidate and vice-chairman, Levon Zurabyan, on Tuesday announced this during their election campaign meeting in Agarak town of Syunik Province.

Zurabyan said that this large-scale project is quite realistic to implement within 5-7 years. According to him, the new railway will connect Armenia’s capital city Yerevan with Iran through Syunik Province, where it will then join the lines going to Iran’s Tabriz or Julfa.

Zurabyan expressed confidence that if this initiative is implemented, Agarak will turn into a major logistics center and become the main gate of this transit route.

“We have called this project the ‘Railway of Peace,’ because it will become a reliable guarantor of our security, and Azerbaijan will no longer be able to put pressure on us,” Levon Zurabyan stated.

He noted that this infrastructure will be a powerful tool for the long-term socioeconomic development of the region, and people will have the opportunity to comfortably reach Yerevan by train and efficiently transport goods.

Zurabyan noted that with competent state management, the aforementioned programs are feasible in a short time.

In addition to presenting the ANC’s economic programs, Levon Zurabyan touched upon the background of the current crisis, and severely criticized the actions of the Armenian authorities on the threshold of the recent tragedy with respect to Nagorno-Karabakh.

Also, the ANC vice-chairman called on voters to carefully familiarize themselves with the election program of their political force and to vote for them during Sunday’s parliamentary election in order to restore a sovereign economy and ensure real peace on Armenia's southern borders.
