Freezing Armenia's membership in the CSTO could, of course, lead to a complete termination of membership in the organization, EU membership cannot be compatible with EAEU membership, and when the time comes to make a decision, Armenia will make that decision. Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party MP candidate, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan on Tuesday stated this during a parliamentary election debate on Public Television.

“If there is a need for a referendum [on either EU or EAEU membership], we [i.e. Armenia] do not need to be prompted from the side, we will hold it when it is possible and convenient,” Mirzoyan noted, adding that Armenia can and should be a bridge between the West and the East.

He said that Armenia is deepening relations with various partners, from the West to the East.

“Yes, our people have expressed their desire in connection with joining the European Union through a civic initiative, and this is expressed in law. As for the interim period, the resolution of short-term and long-term threats, we are not deepening hostility with our immediate neighbors in order to ensure the permanent presence of a ‘big brother’ to protect Armenia, but rather we are building peace and partnership with our four neighbors,” the Armenian FM said.

According to Mirzoyan, this is the guarantee of lasting peace.
