The matter of Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is at a crucial phase, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"Yerevan is announcing that there is no question of leaving the Eurasian Economic Union yet, since they have not yet joined the European Union. You know, Armenia has already adopted a law on EU membership, so the issue is already firmly set... Here, of course, there is a need to quickly decide and resolve the issues," Lavrov said during a press conference.

He recalled the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin and members of the Russian government that the issue of Armenia's membership "will have to be clarified quite quickly."

"Not because we [i.e. Russia] do not respect the choice of the Armenian people. We want to know that choice clearly. Otherwise, it is impossible to implement Armenia's law on joining the European Union and at the same time remain part of the Eurasian Economic Union, since the norms by which these two structures operate do not correspond to each other," added the Russian foreign minister.
