Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan want Armenia to clarify its position on staying in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) or joining the European Union (EU) as soon as possible, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson Maria Zakharova told RIA Novosti.

“Russia, like the other three EAEU countries—Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan—want this issue to be clarified as soon as possible,” Zakharova said.

She noted that it is no coincidence that the joint statement of the leaders of the four aforesaid EAEU countries on May 29 emphasized the need to hold a national referendum in Armenia on this matter as soon as possible. According to her, this is the only mechanism provided for by the constitution of Armenia for making decisions on the country's membership in supranational international organizations.

Zakharova added that the governments of the four aforementioned EAEU countries need to prepare a joint analytical report on the current situation and submit it prior to the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting in December.

“And this work will certainly be carried out,” concluded the Russian MFA spokesperson.
