President Donald Trump’s administration has formally notified US Congress of its intention to sell dozens of jet engines worth more than $700 million to Turkey, according to a copy of the formal notification seen by Reuters, the latter reports.

Congress has 15 days to introduce a joint resolution of disapproval if it wants to block the sale. Such a resolution would need to pass in both chambers and could be vetoed by Trump.

The sale is an important gesture to Ankara ahead of a ⁠pivotal NATO summit there next month and to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, whom Trump considers a key ally.

These are General Electric engines for the fifth-generation KAAN fighter jets being developed by Turkey; they are the Turkish alternative to the American F-35 fighter jets after Ankara was excluded from that program.

The KAAN fighter has been manufactured in Turkey since 2017 as part of the National Combat Aircraft program. It is planned that its serial production will begin in 2028.

Turkish authorities had earlier reported that the KAAN will surpass the American F-35 in terms of tactical and technical characteristics and in the future will replace the F-16 fighters of the Turkish Air Force.
