The Israeli Cabinet unanimously approved a proposal by Israel to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, Haaretz reports. And now the decision will be forwarded to the Knesset (parliament) for approval. The document emphasizes that Israel will officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, which was committed in the last years of the Ottoman Empire, and will also condemn any attempt to deny, belittle, or distort historical truth.

According to the Israeli foreign ministry, as of today, 32 countries have already recognized the Armenian Genocide in one form or another. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated that it is “never too late to do the right thing.”

The text of the proposal also states that despite extensive and unequivocal historical documentation, the Armenian Genocide continues to be the target of an organized campaign of denial and belittling, including through the manipulative rewriting of history textbooks, primarily by Turkey.

In a legal opinion sent to the cabinet, Tamar Kaplan Turgeman, legal advisor to the Israeli foreign ministry, noted that after the decision is made, the Israeli government will officially inform the Knesset and seek to put the matter to a vote in the plenary session of parliament.
