US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff discussed the memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran during a special telephone briefing organized for both houses of Congress. They reiterated that the White House's ultimate goal is to sign a comprehensive agreement with Iran, reports Politico.

Witkoff and Rubio reiterated what the US administration has already promised to some officials in private conversations, sources say. Washington's goal is to reach a final agreement so that Iran cannot keep highly enriched uranium. According to Rubio and Witkoff, US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum of understanding precisely to start these discussions.

Also, Witkoff confirmed that a technical team of experts will travel to Qatar, where talks are expected on Tuesday. Earlier, CNN, citing its sources, reported that Witkoff had already left for Doha, the capital of Qatar.

According to Axios, US and Iranian envoys will arrive in Qatar this week, but no direct contacts are planned between them.

Earlier, Donald Trump had announced that US-Iranian talks would be held in Doha on Tuesday. However, Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmail Baghaei had said that Tehran does not plan any contacts with the American side in Qatar in the coming days.
