European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has outlined the prospects for the liberalization of Armenia’s visa regime with the European Union (EU). It is noteworthy, however, that she did not specify any timeframes, limiting herself to general wording.

At a press briefing with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan, answering a question about the process and timeframes for Armenia’s visa liberalization with the EU, von der Leyen stated that Armenia is the only partner that is in such an active dialogue with the EU on this issue, which shows the level of cooperation.

The European politician made a reference to the program implementation report published in April and announced that a respective mission will visit Armenia in the fall to assess the achievements in this regard.

According to von der Leyen, after Armenia meets all the points, the parties will proceed to the liberalization of the visa regime, but reforms are necessary for this.

For his part, Pashinyan stated that during the recent parliamentary election campaign he had said that there would be a “liberalization situation” by 2029. He agreed that a lot depends on Armenia, on the quality of the country’s reforms.

Pashinyan emphasized that the Armenian people are waiting for this decision and voted for it in the parliamentary elections on June 7.

“We cannot miss this opportunity, we will make every effort to resolve this issue,” the Armenian premier pledged.
