In the American state of Missouri, a 35-year-old mother of five was fatally shot while buying cold drinks for her children at a gas station in the city of Ferguson after a shooting broke out in the parking lot, Fox News reports.

According to Ferguson police, Shaquela Martin was at the gas station around midnight on Tuesday with two of her children, aged 9 and 6. The woman had stopped to buy slushies (frozen drinks) on a hot summer evening when a conflict that began inside the store escalated into gunfire outside.

Police Chief Troy Doyle said that, according to preliminary information, Martin was not involved in the conflict and may have been an innocent bystander.

“She just came to buy drinks for her little children. The children were not physically harmed, but they were obviously seriously traumatized. One can only imagine what children feel when they see their mother being killed before their eyes,” he said.

An adult man was also wounded in the shooting and remains in critical condition. His role in the incident has not yet been established.

Police say the shooting began inside the store and continued in the parking lot. The suspect has not yet been apprehended, and the investigation is ongoing.

According to relatives, Martin was preparing to move into a new home, and on the day of the tragedy she wanted to mark the occasion with a small family celebration featuring ice cream and drinks.
