Russia is proposing to Armenia to build a nuclear power plant with one or two units. Alexey Likhachev, director general of Russian state corporation Rosatom, said this in an interview with Vesti newscast.

Likhachev said that today 30 percent of electricity in Armenia is nuclear-powered, but demand is growing, and in the coming decades this may lead to a shortage of electrical capacity.

“We must be ready for this. And our answer is a large or medium-capacity plant, one or two units, which will cover the upcoming energy deficits for decades. And, of course, we are deeply convinced that the presence of nuclear competence, the presence of such an industry is in itself a sign of a quality economy and industry,” Likhachev stated.

He recalled that after the next phase of the Armenian nuclear plant’s resumption of operation, its capacity was increased by about 10 percent.
