States along the U.S. Atlantic coast, as well as some other parts of the country, have been placed under a flood risk alert, ABC News reports.

“More than 60 million people from Ohio to Massachusetts and Virginia are preparing for possible flooding after intense heat that affected the East Coast over the holiday weekend,” the broadcaster notes.

New York state and Long Island are forecast to be at the center of the storm zone. Heavy rain is also expected in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

As early as Sunday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed residents in a video message, warning of the potentially dangerous consequences of the bad weather.

Hundreds of flights have already been canceled at airports in New York and New Jersey.

Rain also began over the weekend in the U.S. capital. Because of it, U.S. President Donald Trump postponed by several hours a speech in downtown Washington marking Independence Day.
