U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday declined to say whether he plans to announce a further reduction of the American military contingent in Europe. Responding to journalists’ question during a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, he said, “We’ll see,” CNN reported.

Asked whether he intends to announce a new reduction in the number of American troops in Europe, Trump replied: “Well, we’ll see.”

The U.S. president also once again criticized NATO, saying that he had even considered not attending the summit.

“I was very disappointed with NATO. And, frankly, if the summit were not being held in Turkey, where my friend is a very strong leader, a very strong man, it is quite possible that I would not have come. I felt that I had to be present because I know that he did everything possible to organize this event,” Trump said.

Trump’s remarks came amid ongoing discussions about the future of the American military presence in Europe.

As sources familiar with the discussions previously reported, Trump had privately considered reducing the number of American troops on the European continent by about a third after expressing dissatisfaction with NATO allies’ refusal to take part in U.S. military operations against Iran.
