The US has revoked a temporary permit for Iranian oil sales, the BBC reports.

The US Treasury Department said it was revoking a waiver that had temporarily lifted oil sanctions on Iran in response to its attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Tuesday announced that Iran had fired on their tankers.

The US Treasury Department called the attacks "wholly unacceptable."

The temporary lifting of sanctions—that is, allowing Iran to produce, sell, and deliver oil to buyers—was one of the points included in the memorandum of understanding on peace that the US and Iran had signed in June.

The memorandum was seen as a step towards a peace agreement, which the parties are currently negotiating.
