NATO considers the destruction of Iran’s nuclear capabilities “important for the whole world,” and the new U.S. strikes “entirely justified.” This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump before the opening of the plenary session of the alliance summit in Ankara.

“We discussed Iran yesterday. The destruction of its nuclear capabilities, which the United States is carrying out, is important for Israel, for the region, for the whole world,” Rutte said.

He also stated that, in NATO’s view, the new wave of U.S. strikes on Iran “is absolutely necessary.”

Rutte called situations in which NATO countries did not allow the United States to use their bases for strikes on Iran “an isolated case.” According to him, 5,000 sorties were carried out from the bases of NATO countries; for example, “Bucharest Airport was closed for commercial traffic for two days.”

At this point Trump interrupted Rutte, noting that the United Kingdom and Spain did not allow the United States to use their bases; however, Rutte tried to have the last word, telling Trump that only thanks to him had Spain and the United Kingdom increased their military spending.

The NATO secretary general also repeated his commercial line, saying that “NATO countries will spend 1 trillion more on defense” and therefore he “calls this money Trump’s trillion.”
