Armenia can become a transit link in the energy sector. The Iranian ambassador to Armenia, Khalil Shirgholami, stated this at a press conference Wednesday.

The Iranian diplomat recalled that Armenia's neighbors are Iran, the third country in the world in terms of natural gas and oil reserves, and Russia, also an influential country in the world in the energy sector. The envoy called this a serious potential for Armenia.

According to him, Armenia and Iran have recently discussed cooperation in the natural gas sector, oil product trade, as well as in the transportation and transit of energy.

But Shirgholami refrained from disclosing other details, explaining that all ideas are at the phase of study, while calling for consideration that there are also new plans. The Iranian ambassador to Armenia added that if both sides show real will, Armenia may find itself in a completely new position in terms of energy transportation and transit.

Also, the Iranian diplomat expressed satisfaction that positive trends are observed in Armenian-Russian relations, adding that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited Russia recently and held productive discussions there.

“It is expedient and beneficial for the countries of the South Caucasus and the neighboring states of the region to put aside their differences and establish cooperation,” Shirgholami concluded.
