Over the past two days, the U.S. military has struck more than 170 Iranian military targets in the area of the Strait of Hormuz, The New York Times reports, citing U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

According to CENTCOM, the attacks targeted air defense systems, drone and missile depots, fast military boats, as well as logistics infrastructure facilities on the Iranian coast.

U.S. command officials said the operation is aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

As The New York Times notes, the scale of the current operation significantly exceeds the previous escalation: the number of targets hit was about 14 times greater than during the two-day series of U.S. strikes on Iran in June.
