US President Donald Trump has instructed his administration to begin talks on regulating the import of commercial aircraft, jet engines, and their associated parts into the country to eliminate national security threats. This is noted in a statement which was posted on the White House website.

Accordingly, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, based on the results of the inspection, came to the conclusion that the conditions and amount of deliveries of commercial aircraft, engines, and spare parts to the US threaten and undermine the national security of the country.

As Trump noted, the US Secretary of Commerce is convinced that the American aircraft industry is currently facing challenges to meet economic and national security demands, including due to the actions of foreign states, excessive dependence on foreign suppliers, and the lack of factors that stimulate domestic investment.

Based on the findings and the report of the Secretary of Commerce, it has been determined that it is necessary and appropriate to begin negotiations with trading partners to regulate imports of commercial aircraft, engines, and spare parts to the US so that these supplies do not threaten the national security of the country, the American leader said.

Trump noted that he has instructed Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to initiate or continue respective talks and to report to him on progress within 180 days. As follows from Trump's statement, measures to regulate imports of the specified products may include, among other things, the imposition of tariffs.
