Qatari negotiators are in Iran, where they are holding meetings with Iranian officials in an effort to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington, a source said, Reuters reports

These consultations are being held in coordination with the US. Their main goal is to create conditions for the continuation of a broader dialogue and discuss the implementation of the US-Iran ceasefire memorandum.

The Reuters’ source added that the parties intend to discuss the reasons for the recent escalation of tension, including disagreements over ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The tension escalated in the region after attacks on commercial tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday night. After that, the US launched a series of strikes on Iranian territory, and Tehran responded by attacking American military facilities in the region.
