Heavy rains and flooding in regions of Azerbaijan, including Zaqatala, Balakan, and Agstafa, caused serious damage to populated areas. Azerbaijani media reported this.

Private homes, household plots, and fruit orchards were flooded in dozens of villages. In the Zaqatala District, the water also flooded the post office building. As a result of the disaster, fences, outbuildings, and bridges were destroyed, while electricity and water supply lines were damaged.

Residents reported that after the water receded, a thick layer of silt remained in the affected areas. In the village of Yolayrydzh in the Zaqatala District, residential houses were flooded, and in some places the water level exceeded one meter. According to local residents, some families did not even have time to take essential belongings and were forced to leave their homes.

The situation also remains difficult in the villages of Vekhtala, Ashagy Chardakhlar, Bekhmedli, Lahij, and Meshlesh. Some residents were evacuated from danger zones. In a number of settlements, electricity and water supplies were temporarily disrupted.

First Deputy Head of the Executive Authority of the Zaqatala District Tofik Akhmedov said that efforts to eliminate the consequences are ongoing and that the damage assessment has already begun.

In the Balakan District, 43-year-old Aslan Rzayev died as a result of the incident. According to local authorities, the man accidentally fell into the water, after which the current of the Katekh River carried him away. His body was found several hours later about three kilometers from the village.

Rescuers also managed to pull 41-year-old Ramiz Askhabov out of the same river.
