A group of American senators announced that they had reached an agreement with President Donald Trump's administration regarding the advancement of an updated bill to tighten sanctions against Russia.

The joint statement was issued by Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal, Roger Wicker, and Lindsey Graham, representing both the Republican and Democratic parties.

“We have reached an agreement with the Trump administration regarding the advancement of an updated sanctions bill concerning Russia,” the statement said. The senators also noted that they expect to present the document in the near future.

This refers to a bill introduced in the Senate in April 2025 by a bipartisan group of lawmakers. Its main authors were Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal.

The document provides, in particular, for the introduction of secondary sanctions against Russia’s trading partners. Among the proposed measures are 500% import tariffs on goods supplied to the United States from countries purchasing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other products.

At the same time, Senator Rand Paul had previously warned that adopting such a bill could cause the greatest harm to the United States itself, both economically and strategically.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in January that the administration considers the adoption of a separate law unnecessary, since President Donald Trump already has the necessary powers to impose sanctions.
