A luxury resort project on Albania’s Sazan Island, linked to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, has become the focus of an investigation into possible land document forgery, Reuters reports.

Albania’s anti-corruption authorities are investigating American businessman Artur Shehu, who in April sold a stretch of protected coastline to Albania Land Development. This entity is connected to the Sazan Real Estate Development project, backed by Kushner’s investment firm Affinity Partners, along with other investors.

According to documents reviewed by Reuters, investigators suspect that forged documents may have been used in the registration of land ownership rights. The investigation materials also allege that Shehu and his possible associates may have been linked to drug trafficking and money laundering through real estate transactions.

Shehu denies the allegations, saying that his family has owned the land for generations. His lawyer insists that the ownership rights were lawful.

At the same time, the investigation does not accuse Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, or Sazan Real Estate Development of any wrongdoing. Representatives of the project said they are not subjects of the investigation and believe the land deals were carried out in accordance with the law.

The roughly $1 billion project envisions the construction of a luxury resort on Sazan Island in the Adriatic Sea. It has previously already sparked a wave of protests in Albania because of environmental risks. Activists fear that construction could damage the island’s unique ecosystem, which is home to flamingos, sea turtles, and other animal species.

Protests against the project have been dubbed the “flamingo revolution.” Demonstrators are demanding a review of the development plans, while Albania’s authorities, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, continue to support the initiative, calling it an important investment project for the country.
