U.S. President Donald Trump said he spoke with South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham on Saturday evening — just a few hours before the politician’s sudden death.

In an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press, Trump said that during the conversation Graham seemed fine, although he did say he was tired.

“Other than being tired, he was fine,” Trump said, adding that the senator’s death was “a quick end, and perhaps that’s not the worst way to go.”

The U.S. president called Graham a close friend and said he regarded him “like a member of the family.” According to Trump, they spoke regularly and played golf together.

As Trump recounted, the politicians’ last conversation was about the SAVE America Act, a bill that would introduce changes to U.S. election rules but does not yet have enough support in the Senate.

“He said he was tired, but he wanted to pass the SAVE America Act. I said, ‘We’ll get it done, Lindsey. We’ll do it. See you soon,’” Trump said.

The U.S. president added that they had expected to meet as soon as Sunday. Graham had returned from a trip to Ukraine shortly before his death.
