US President Donald Trump said that Iran had allegedly agreed to the terms of a deal with Washington, but shortly afterward attacked a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz with a drone.

In an interview with NBC News' Meet the Press, Trump said that US representatives had held talks with the Iranian side the day before.

"We had meetings with them. Yesterday they agreed to a deal. A perfect deal for us. No nuclear program... They gave up everything, and then less than an hour later they launched a drone at a ship," the American leader said.

Trump did not specify what exact deal he was referring to.

The US president also said that after the attack, the American military "delivered a powerful strike" against Iran.

In addition, Trump stressed that the Strait of Hormuz remains open to shipping, despite Tehran's statements to the contrary.

"I told them: 'You are just sick people.' That's it," Trump added, speaking about Iran.

He also said that the Strait of Hormuz remains open despite Iran's claims to the contrary, and stated that the US "bombed the hell out of them last night."
