Former President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to two years in prison in one of the eight criminal cases being considered against him. This was reported by the Yonhap news agency.

The Seoul Central District Court found the former president guilty of violating the law on political campaign financing. According to the court, a specialized polling firm conducted free public opinion surveys worth about $190,000 in the interests of Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife ahead of the 2022 presidential election.

The prosecution argued that the head of the polling firm, Myung Tae-kyun, expected favors in return for the support he had provided.

The same court sentenced Myung Tae-kyun to one and a half years in prison.

At the same time, the former president’s wife, Kim Keon Hee, had earlier been acquitted on a similar charge of violating the law on political campaign financing by courts of first and second instance. Yoon Suk Yeol’s lawyers pointed to this circumstance and stated their intention to appeal the court’s decision.

Earlier, in February, a court of first instance sentenced Yoon Suk Yeol to life imprisonment in a case concerning the organization of an insurrection against the constitutional order. Under the criminal law of the Republic of Korea, this crime carries two possible penalties: life imprisonment or the death penalty.
