UK authorities are planning to introduce nighttime restrictions on social media for teenagers, The Independent reported.

“These measures will be crucial in helping young people get enough sleep, focus on their studies at schools and colleges, and spend more time with family and friends, which is the foundation for a happy, healthy, and fulfilling adult life,” Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said, commenting on the goals of the new government initiative.

The article’s authors уточняют that, under the proposed plan, 16- and 17-year-old users will be subject to a voluntary nighttime curfew that will, by default, block access to apps from 00:00 to 06:00. The restrictions include the automatic disabling of infinite scroll in news feeds, the deactivation of algorithmic recommendation feeds, and mandatory breaks when using AI chatbots.

The department head also pointed to the authorities’ intention to provide young people with the necessary tools so that the online space becomes a place for development and the safe use of the benefits of modern technology.
