U.S. President Donald Trump does not take threats to his life seriously and often jokes about them in private, Semafor reports, citing sources close to the American leader.

“Behind closed doors, Trump displays an almost ironic attitude toward his own security. More than half a dozen of his aides and lawmakers close to him confirmed that he does not fixate on assassination risks, but when the subject comes up, he often ‘jokes about it,’” the outlet writes, citing lawmakers and a White House official.

At the same time, according to the outlet, despite statements that he is ‘public enemy number one’ for Iran, Trump rarely talks about threats against him in private settings.

“He talks about it privately too: ‘No one told me how dangerous it is to be president, and if they had, I probably wouldn’t have run.’ And he makes comments like that jokingly, but there is reality behind it,” the official told the outlet.

As one example of Trump’s attitude toward assassination attempts against him, the outlet cites his reaction to discussions of security measures ahead of a UFC match at the White House, a terrorist attack on which was later thwarted.

“We’re all going to die somehow!” the president replied when officials began outlining the possibility of such an attack during the event.

Trump has been the target of four assassination attempts in two years. In June 2024, he narrowly dodged a bullet that wounded his ear. The most recent case recognized as an attempt on the American leader’s life was a foiled plot uncovered in June to attack a UFC tournament at the White House.
