In the coming days, the United States may face the threat of smog from wildfires, as well as flooding caused by heavy rains and abnormal heat, the National Weather Service warned on Thursday.

“Smog from wildfires is affecting a large part of the Great Lakes region and the northwestern United States. Air quality alerts are in effect,” the statement said.

Similar alerts have also been issued for a number of areas in the Midwest.

“Abnormal heat and humidity are being observed across the Northern Plains and the Midwest, extending into the northern Mid-Atlantic states,” the notice said.

Residents of Texas, by contrast, will face heavy downpours that could lead to flooding.

“Life-threatening widespread flash flooding is expected in southern and central Texas at least through Friday,” the statement noted.
