On July 19, during loading operations at offshore mooring facilities, two seagoing tankers — “ASIA” carrying النفط of Tengizchevroil (“Chevron”) and “NISSOS IOS” carrying oil from Kashagan B.V. and Maten (JSC NC KazMunayGas) — were subjected to a targeted terrorist attack using unmanned aerial vehicles. This was reported by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium.

“The tankers, sailing under the flags of Liberia (“ASIA”) and the Marshall Islands (“NISSOS IOS”), have international crews on board.

As a result of the attack, a fire broke out on board the “ASIA” tanker, but it was extinguished. Oil loading has been halted. There were no injuries or fatalities. No oil spill occurred. The crew members did not require medical assistance. The tanker remained afloat, and damage assessment is underway.

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium brings together the largest fuel and energy enterprises of Russia, the United States, Kazakhstan, and several Western European countries. We believe that the attack on the company’s facility and civilian vessels in the waters of the Marine Terminal is also an attack on the interests of the consortium’s member states.

We emphasize that this is already the fifth act of direct aggression against an exclusively civilian consortium facility protected under international law.

We also note that no sanctions or restrictive measures have ever been imposed on the consortium,” the statement said.
