King Charles III of the United Kingdom accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The Buckingham Palace press office announced this, BBC reports.

“Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience with the King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept. Lady Starmer was also received by the King,” the statement said.

In his final speech as prime minister, he wished his successor all the very best.

Andy Burnham became the new prime minister of the United Kingdom. Previously, the politician was known as the Mayor of Greater Manchester and the leader of the Labour Party. The King will soon receive him at Buckingham Palace to form a government. Burnham will then deliver his speech on Downing Street.

Keir Starmer’s resignation means that there are currently nine living former prime ministers left — a record number, BBC notes.
